The National Urban League and its affiliates strongly condemn the Trump administration’s latest reckless and politically motivated attempt to punish states by withholding $10 billion in critical funding that supports low-income children and families.

Programs like the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Child Care and Development Fund, and Social Services Block Grants are lifelines for hundreds of thousands of families, providing essential support including childcare, cash assistance, and job training. This move threatens the communities we serve by disrupting programs that drive up costs for families, and it limits essential access to vital services like housing, healthcare and education.

The administration’s unfounded accusations of “fraud” within these programs are nothing more than scare tactics aimed at immigrant communities and the states that defend them. Instead of addressing the growing affordability crisis, the Trump administration has chosen to escalate its political witch hunt, fueling fear, enabling harm to immigrant families, and targeting those who stand up for their neighbors. Americans are increasingly seeing the dangerous reality of this administration: disagreement with the White House can mean denying children and families access to food, care, and opportunity.

We applaud the courts for blocking this unlawful act of retaliation and urge state leaders to continue resisting efforts that punish communities for standing up for their residents. Targeting states based on political ideology has no place in a democratic society.

As the Trump administration continues to stir widespread chaos, the National Urban League will stand firmly with our allies in state government and civil society to protect these critical investments and ensure communities get the resources they need, free from illegal and politically motivated attacks.
