All across the Midlands there are children going back to school without any supplies, whether it’s due to family finances or the hardships from the pandemic.

So, on Friday (August 13th), the Columbia Urban League (Columbia, SC) decided to step in and help by giving out free bookbags full of school supplies.

“I just had knee surgery, so I hadn't been able to hobble around in the stores good enough to get things for my children,” said Lasonya McMath who received supplies. “This is more helpful for me.”

The organization gave out more than 300 bags that were donated by Absolute Total Care and Walmart.

"You have people trying to balance everything and I think this giveaway for bookbags provides a great opportunity to help them with some of the finances and expenditures that they have to provide with going back to school,” said President and CEO of Columbia Urban League, JT McLawhorn.

Not only did families get bookbags full of supplies but there was something inside called a “Pledge Card” and organizers hope it’ll inspire students.

“We ask them to pledge to do your very best to be kind to other people, to take advantage of opportunities in essence,” said McLawhorn.
