HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE TO RALLY ON CIVIL RIGHTS, GUN SAFETY, WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE AS NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE KICKS OFF 2023 CONFERENCE IN DOWNTOWN HOUSTON

HOUSTON, TX (July 26, 2023) – On the heels of recent life altering decisions handed down by the Supreme Court and a looming Presidential election, the National Urban League launched its 2023 Conference with a rally centered on the nation’s most pressing issues including Civil Rights, Gun Safety, Women’s Rights and Economic Justice.

“Now more than ever, our country has seen an explosive growth in domestic extremism and the threat it poses to our communities, our families, and our democracy,” said Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League. “The cynical efforts to deny the freedoms of our most marginalized communities need to be challenged directly and undeniably. While we’re in Houston, we will raise our voices in the fight to restore and advance the rights of our most vulnerable communities.

“The rally kicked off the National Urban League’s 4-day conference that is expected to draw thousands of attendees to the Houston area. This year, the conference is hosted with the Houston Area Urban League led by President and CEO Judson W. Robinson, III. Prominent speakers from today’s rally included National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial, Houston Area Urban League President and CEO Judson W. Robinson, III, Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee, Houston City Council Member Tiffany D. Thomas, and National Urban League Young Professionals President Shalondan Hollingshed.

“The 2023 National Urban League conference is set to be the largest and most influential gathering focused on civil rights and urban advocacy in the nation. Year after year, this event brings together leaders from various sectors including business, government, and social advocacy, who are dedicated to exploring critical issues and initiatives that profoundly impact the communities served by the Urban League network of 92 affiliates across the country.”
