Academy Award Winning Actor
Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali will next be seen starring in the sci-fi thriller, SOVEREIGN. The film, directed by Marc Munden, will follow a man who seeks revenge against a spaceship that killed his wife.
Ali was recently announced to star in the Marvel reboot of BLADE, produced by Kevin Feige. He was also recently announced to star in SOLITARY, a film about a man who spends four decades in solitary confinement, based on the book by Albert Woodfox.
Ali can most recently be seen starring opposite Stephen Dorff in the third season of HBO’s critically acclaimed series, TRUE DETECTIVE, created by Nic Pizzolatto. The season, having premiered January 13th on HBO, plays out in three separate time periods, following a mystery that deepens over decades.
This past February, Ali starred as Vector in Robert Rodriguez’s ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, alongside Jennifer Connelly and Christoph Waltz.
Last fall, Ali starred opposite Viggo Mortensen in Peter Farrely’s Academy Award and Golden Globe winning film, GREEN BOOK, for which he received Academy, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for “Best Actor.” Also last fall, Ali also voiced the character of Aaron Davis in Sony’s SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, directed by Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman. The film received the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for “Best Animated Film.”
In 2017, Ali starred in Barry Jenkins’ Academy Award Best Picture drama MOONLIGHT, for which he received Academy and Screen Actors Guild awards for “Best Supporting Actor.” Ali also appeared in Theodore Melfi’s Academy Award nominated film, HIDDEN FIGURES, opposite Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer.
From 2013 to 2016, Ali starred as Remy Danton in the award-winning Netflix series HOUSE OF CARDS, for which he received an Emmy nomination in 2016.
Other credits include Gary Ross’s THE FREE STATE OF JONES, opposite Matthew McConaughey; the final installments of THE HUNGER GAMES franchise, playing Boggs in MOCKINGJAY Parts 1 and Part 2; the Marvel/Netflix series LUKE CAGE, in which he played Cottonmouth;Derek Cianfrance’s critically-acclaimed THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, opposite Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper; and David Fincher’s THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON.
Ali received his Master’s in acting from New York University and currently resides in Los Angeles.
