How the Houston Area Urban League & Progressive’s Down Payment Assistance Program Made Homeownership a Reality for a Young Buyer
Lena White is a 28-year-old African American first-time home buyer who successfully closed on her home with the help of the Houston Area Urban League & Progressive’s Down Payment Assistance Program.
Prior to purchasing her home, Ms. White left apartment living to move back in with her parents to save for homeownership.
She first attended the Houston Area Urban League (HAUL)’s Homebuyer Group Education Workshop in July 2025, and shortly after scheduled a one-on-one Pre-Purchase counseling session to further discuss her individual situation. Through counseling, she learned about budgeting, saving, and the homebuying process and developed skills to manage her finances and build wealth through homeownership.
ResultThe down payment assistance allowed Ms. White to achieve her homeownership goal sooner than she had projected. Additionally, she was able to put some of her savings towards an emergency fund for future household maintenance.
For about the same amount as she was paying in rent, she is now investing in her future.
