The Success of the Urban Youth Reentry Program

The Awesome Strides of the Urban Youth Reentry Program

Over the past four years, the National Urban League and its affiliates have worked tirelessly to promote secondary education opportunities for individuals previously involved in the criminal justice system. They have also provided essential follow-up services, including wraparound support, job placement services, and continuous mentoring for all participants in the Urban Youth Reentry Job Program (YARP). The National Urban League has enrolled 562 participants in the YARP, successfully overcoming challenges and developing best practices, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Operating in seven affiliate cities across the U.S., including: The Urban League of Louisiana, The Urban League of Greater Atlanta, The Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City, The Urban League of Essex County, The Urban League of Greater Hartford, The Austin Area Urban League, and The Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis. The Urban Youth Reentry Program has provided educational opportunities that have empowered many participants to become first-generation college students, with several still actively enrolled in their college programs. This journey to success has not been without its challenges, namely, the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Most direct services were halted at the onset until programs could pivot and adjust to delivering services differently. Each affiliate was forced to think creatively and adapt, creating virtual and hybrid learning platforms that allowed participants to continue their education when traditional in-person learning was not an option.

The ability to transition to virtual spaces was instrumental in ensuring that participants could keep progressing toward their educational and career goals despite the global disruption.

Below are just a few pictures of recent events and our YARP affiliates.

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta, in partnership with Atlanta Technical College and the University of Georgia, hosted a financial literacy event.

Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (ULSTL)

Success Story: Turran Bailey

Upon enrollment, Mr. Turran Bailey faced numerous legal and domestic challenges. Referred to the program by ULSTL’s in-house public safety team, Turran had several pending court cases in both St. Louis City and multiple counties. During his initial week in the program, he faced two court appearances that could have resulted in immediate incarceration. However, with strong advocacy and support that highlighted his commitment to personal development and rehabilitation, Turran avoided jail time.

He went on to complete Life Skills and Career Readiness Training and demonstrated consistent attendance at all court dates. He began weekly therapy sessions with a licensed professional and entered mediation to gain joint custody of his daughter. Turran also secured part-time employment at Popeyes and is actively pursuing additional work while planning to obtain a trade certification to expand his career opportunities.

He continues to receive mentoring and coaching through the program and remains committed to self-improvement and creating a stable future for himself and his daughter.
