  • Investing for Success is a program and partnership of the National Urban League and the Investment Company Institute Education Foundation.

Launched in 2000, the partnership promotes investor education among African Americans. The program includes evening workshops hosted by NUL affiliates across the country and an award-winning web course.

African Americans hold only 33 percent of their assets in financial investments compared to 43 percent held by whites (see the 2004 State of Black America). Investing for Success advances NUL's mission of economic empowerment by helping African Americans learn how to accumulate wealth through investing in the financial markets.

The program teaches the basics of investing by focusing on two broad topics: 1) becoming an informed investor, and 2) planning for long-term investment goals such as education and retirement. Everyone who attends a workshop receives an Investing for Success "portfolio," including brochures, worksheets, a calculator, a motivational DVD, and other items. Please check the Investing for Success events page for upcoming workshops.

The Investing for Success web course is available for those who are unable to attend a workshop and serves as a source of additional information for workshop attendees. The web course features 10 self-paced lessons that include interactive worksheets and calculators, video clips of African-American investors, related online resources, and quizzes that offer immediate feedback. Anyone who completes all 10 lessons can print a customized certificate of course completion.

The web course and workshops are available free of charge. For more information on the Investing for Success program, please contact Claudia Mchunu at cmchunu@nul.org or Denise Murray at dmurray@ici.org
