  • Delivering on the Promise

The right to vote is the first step in civic empowerment. That's why the National Urban League is leading a new empowerment movement to give people the skills and access they need to take an active role in determining the direction, quality of life and policies shaping their communities.

As a non-partisan organization, the National Urban League, through its affiliates and Urban League volunteer groups, the National Council of Guilds, NUL Young Professionals and the Council of Board Chairs, works to communicate the message that the right to vote is a powerful tool to effect changes important to the individual, the community and the world.

In order to mobilize citizens to serve their communities by participating in the political process, the National Urban League has partnered with Unity '04 - a non-partisan effort to increase voter registration, education and participation. Working closely with Unity '04 and the National Coalition for Black Participation, the following Urban League auxiliary organizations donate their time and energy to help energize voters in their cities:

    • National Urban League Young Professionals - NULYP - With over 3,000 members in 43 chapters, these successful young achievers (21-40 years old) represent the next generation of Urban League leaders, donating their time to corporate, social and community activism

    • National Council of Urban League Guilds - 2,200 members strong and growing, 72 Guild chapters organize community-service initiatives and head up fundraising under the guidance of local affiliates

    • National Council of Board Chairs - Local corporate and community leaders who serve on the affiliates' boards of trustees and help to fundraise, donate resources and direct resources to Urban League affiliates.
