    National Urban League to Release 2007 State of Black America
    Report Includes Annual Equality Index

  • WHAT: National Urban League President Marc H. Morial will unveil The State of Black America 2007: Portrait of the Black Male report, the league's yearly assessment of the condition of the African-American community. Morial will speak to the black male crisis and provide a list of policy recommendations to alleviate it. Through its Equality Index, the report provides a statistical measurement of equality gaps that exist between African Americans and mainstream America in five areas -- education, economics, health, civic engagement and social justice.

    The study, which includes a foreword by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., also features thought-provoking essays and op-eds by prominent intellectuals and activists, including: Re-imagining Black Masculine Identity: An Investigation of the "Problem" Surrounding the Construction of Black Masculinity in America by David J. Johns; Reconnecting Young Black Men: What Policies Would Help? by Harry J. Holzer, Ph.D; Why Should African Americans Care About Macroeconomic Policy? by William M. Rodgers, III, Ph.D; Still Segregated, Still Unequal: Analyzing the Impact of No Child Left Behind on African American Students by Christopher B. Knaus, Ph.D; Losing Our Children in America's Cradle to Prison Pipeline by Marian Wright Edelman; and Sexual Fault Lines: Robbing the Love Between Us by Michael Eric Dyson, Ph. D, among others.
