National Urban League Announces TEXACO Grant to Support NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE Leadership Development Programs
June 25, 2001, New York, NYHugh Price, President and CEO of the National Urban League, announced today an innovative nonprofit leadership development program developed with support from Texaco. The program includes in-kind support to create a customized leadership training program for senior National Urban League managers.
Texaco has created a special Texaco Management Institute (TMI) for the League, tailored to meet its specific training needs. The National Urban League/Texaco Management Institute (NUL-TMI), modeled after Texacos renowned, intensive three-day nonprofit leadership training program, will be conducted at Texacos headquarters in White Plains, New York, from June 25-28.
A $350,000 three-year grant awarded by Texaco in 2000 is helping the National Urban League train its affiliate presidents, senior program officers and management staff. Part of the grant is being used to expand the Leagues Whitney M. Young, Jr. Center for Urban Leadership, by creating additional curriculum and ongoing professional development programs for affiliate senior managers in the areas of financial management, governance, strategic planning, marketing, fundraising and organizational management among others.
"An organization can only be as strong as its leaders," said Price. "We are grateful to Texaco in recognizing that the skills of our movements leadership are critical to future growth."
Glenn F. Tilton, Chairman and CEO of Texaco added, "All organizations, including community organizations, need strong managers in order to succeed in todays business environment. We are pleased to be able to provide this historic support and to partner with the National Urban League to foster greater management capacity for its network of affiliates.
